October 1, 2014 – Newsura Insurance Services, Inc. has succeeded in recruiting Paul Kivela, MD, MBA,FACEP as its Executive Vice President & Chief Medical Officer. According to Terry Borchers, Newsura’s Founder and President, “We are very, very fortunate to be able to welcome Dr. Kivela to our management team. He’s not only a gifted physician, and a recognized leader in the specialty of emergency medicine, but an ‘outside-of-the-box’ thinker and doer who has a passion for improving the practice of medicine.”

Borchers went on to say, “I met Paul at the California Chapter of the American College of Emergency Medicine’s (CAL/ACEP) Scientific Assembly in Long Beach, California in 2003. As I got to know Paul, and shared my vision for Newsura, he shared his thinking on how to prevent the occurrence of medical errors and reduce the number, severity and overall cost of medical malpractice claims. Since Risk Reduction is Job #2 at Newsura, his innovative, yet immensely practical ideas not only captured my attention, but inspired me to partner with him in bringing them to market. As we worked together, it dawned on me that given our 100%-focus on the healthcare industry, we needed to have a physician’s voice on our management team and a physician’s perspective and thinking in our new product development efforts. Paul’s keen intellect and can-do attitude is a perfect fit for us.”

“Dr. Kivela’s credentials are enviable”, added Borchers. “He received his B.S. in Biology degree from the University of Illinois in 1986, then went on to graduate from the University of Illinois College of Medicine in 1990.  He did his emergency medicine residency training at LA County-Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, one of the top five such programs in the U.S., is Board Certified in Emergency Medicine and a Fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians. Dr. Kivela served as attending emergency physician at three San Francisco Bay Area hospitals…San Francisco General Hospital, Mt. Zion Hospital, and Brookside Hospital/ Doctors Hospital-San Pablo, then went on to become Medical Director at both United Samaritans Medical Center (Danville, IL) and Michael Reese Hospital and Medical Center (Chicago, IL). While in Chicago, Dr. Kivela served on the founding faculty of the Michael Reese-Resurrection Emergency Medicine Residency Program. Dr. Kivela earned his MBA from the University of Tennessee in 2000. He currently practices emergency medicine at Queen of the Valley Medical Center (Napa, CA) where he has just finished serving as the Managing Partner of Napa Valley Emergency Medical Group. He is published, has lectured and consulted, especially on the subject of EMTALA. Dr. Kivela has been giving his valuable time to furthering the interests of his emergency medicine specialty. Paul served as the President of the California Chapter of ACEP from June 2004 to June, 2005 and was invited to join ACEP’s Board of Directors in 2010. At ACEP 2014, the ACEP Board elected Paul to the position of Vice President.”

An entrepreneur by nature, Dr. Kivela was CEO of MediComp, LLC from 1996 to 1999 and was Founder and Co-Director of Emergency Medicine Education Systems, Inc. (EMEDS, Inc.), a well-known educator in emergency medicine circles which he and his partner, Dr. David Mendelson, sold to EmCare in 2000.

“Paul’s ‘charge’ in his EVP & CMO role here at Newsura is to finish building out and launch Newsura’s proprietary FailSafe® System of risk identification and risk reduction products and services, added Borchers. “We think they’re going to be extremely well received.

Newsura is currently 100%-focused on the healthcare industry in general and hospitals and medical groups with 3 to 300 physicians in particular. Newsura’s clients bring Newsura onto their management teams to consolidate and manage their insurance portfolios, identify and reduce risk, enhance coverage and save money. The Company has built leading market shares in the specialties of emergency medicine and radiology and has just announced that it is now expanding nationally.
